INTRODUCTION TO PHYSICAL THEATRE

This approach to theatre has its roots in the experimental work of Polish theatre companies whose work, in the sixties, shook the theatre world by its roots. In 2003, I offered my first workshop using this style of theatre to a group of young teenagers, slightly fearful that it would be too demanding. The response to the work was so favorable that it led me to entirely change my manner of teaching.

A dynamic workshop that introduces students to theatre skills through improvisation. Students are continually involved in engaging exercises that explore active participation and response in imaginary circumstances. Working in pairs, as an ensemble, and individually, keeps participants continually changing partners and interacting with the entire group. Choral movement and sound work is introduced. Exercises lead to the creation of short scenes students have the chance to perform. These workshops involve total participation of all actors at all times and involve the collaborative development of movement, sound score, and text. Sound scaping, voice work, rhythm and movement skills are introduced. Improvisation exercises encourage individuals to explore and communicate their own experience in a dramatic context.

THE PROJECT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS

The Project Development programs are intensive workshops that occur over the duration of eight days, in which a core group entirely develops a theatre piece, based on a chosen theme.

The project is developed in physical/ensemble style theatre which involves total participation of all actors at all times. Through the collaborative development of movement, sound score, and text, a theatre piece is collectively developed and performed. There is minimal use of set and props. All participants remain involved and must remain inter-connected to the group at all times. Skills covered in the duration of the week include voice, movement, improvisation, mask work, and acting technique. The project culminates in a final presentation.

Theatre skills workshops would be offered in voice, movement, improvisation, mask work, and acting technique.
